What is a MUN?

MUN?
UN Youth Tasmania runs a number of conferences every year called MUNs or 'Model United Nations'. Participants at MUNs, called delegates, represent (either as an individual or in a team) a Member State of the United Nations and attempt to further the interests of that State in debate over resolutions.

This could include individual interests, such as to prevent a resolution critical of your country being passed, or collective interests, such as to allow the deployment of peacekeepers to a warzone. Resolutions are the equivalent of laws passed by the UN, but they differ from 'laws' we have in Australia, for example, because they are not always binding or enforceable.

The aim of a MUN is to provide the most realistic portrayal possible of your adopted country's foreign policy, interests and alliances and develops good public speaking, debating and negotiating skills.

Member's MUN
MUNing is normally very formal, using rules of procedure based on those used at the UN. In a Member's MUN these rules are relaxed so that delegates can have a bit of fun and muck around with the foreign policy of the State they are representing.

Next Member's MUN
UN Youth Tasmania's next MUN will be held on January 15th, entitled SUNMUN further details can be found at www.unyouthtas.org.au/SUNMUN-2012 and registration can be done here www.unyouthtas.org.au/SUNMUN-2012-Registration-Form.
